Often in life we are presented with a choice between what is easy and what is fancy. Hot water is better than cold water. But it requires heating the water up, which is a lot of work. Also, hot water isn’t necessarily very enjoyable if you aren’t willing to focus on it, to be present with it, to intentionally enjoy it.
Small silly expenditures of effort create meaning in life. Avoiding these in the name of austerity is really just a way of keeping a cold distance from the world. I’m not into it.
The principle of heating up your water applies not only to decisions regarding yourself, but also to decisions that impact other people. If you could spend an extra 10 minutes going to a further away store to get your friend nicer flowers, then maybe you should do it!
trigger: decision to do something somewhat inconvenient which is pretty fancy. action: do it!
One should not take the principle of heating up water too far. Opp cost is real. This is just a directional update that I should apply, others might need to reverse this advice.
