By moving on from a thing, I mean becoming less emotionally distraught at the fact that things are not the way you wish.

First, let’s briefly discuss when to move on from things:

  • If something isn’t how you want and it’s fairly tractable to remedy that, then don’t move on!
  • If you still don’t understand the story of why the thing didn’t go the way you wanted.
  • If there are more good changes to yourself that you could accomplish by thinking about the situation for longer.

Here are some ideas for how to move on collated from previous blog posts:

  • How should you deal with sadness?
    • Remember that it’s ok and valuable to feel sorrow about things.
    • Tell a friend about it.
    • Don’t spend too much time ruminating on it. Time box when you are allowed to think about it.
  • Forgive for Good — book review
    • Articulate hope, admit that it didn’t need to go this way (no rule), reconnect to positive intent, make a plan.
    • Mostly focus on your positive intention not the thing that didn’t go as hoped.
  • How to want (private so the link won’t work)
    • Assign partial credit for good process.
    • Enjoy the struggle towards goodness despite the fact that it didn’t work out.
    • Focus on the fact that there is still some good in the world. Be grateful.
